Karlsson, Martin (2012. Participatory Initiatives and Political Representation: The Case of Local Councillors in Sweden. In: Local Government Studies 38 (6), S. 795–815. DOI: 10.1080/03003930.2012.688036.

problem

  • do role perceptions of local councillors in Sweden influence the chance of the introduction of citizen participation instruments like participatory budgets?

methods

  • survey among councillors in 3 Swedish municipalities with different levels of citizen participation (low, medium and high level of participation projects)

summary

  • Karlsson meausures the acceptance of civic participation amongst councillors at the aggregate level using the number of conducted participation projects in each municipality. He does not find any significant relation between the role perceptions of the councillors and these numbers. He assumes that is due to the overall low variance among the role perceptions as the independent variable.
